Live Video Mondrian

When: Fall 06

As Piet Mondrian moved from impressionism to his non-representational paintings, he moved closer to developing a pure representation of nature in shape and color. Nature was too chaotic for him, so much so that when seated by a window in a restaurant, he asked to be moved so that he would not be overwhelmed by looking out the window.

Live Video Mondrian converts real time video into a Mondrian-like representation, decomposing the varied colors and shapes of reality to several core pixels and colors. Since the Mondrian painting is hooked into a live video feed, it shifts and alters its representation as the live video feed provides new compositions. As the information travels from the crisp reality to the abstract digital Mondrian, we can follow Mondrian's career as he moves away from impressionism to develop a language for general beauty.
